What is a HC Licence?

An HC (Heavy Combination) Licence allows you to drive vehicles that consist of a prime mover (truck or tractor unit) and one trailer, where the combined Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) exceeds 9 tonnes. This includes semi-trailers and vehicles towing a trailer, as well as any vehicle covered by the MR (Medium Rigid) or HR (Heavy Rigid) Licences.

The HC Licence is essential for drivers aiming to work in industries such as freight transport, long-haul trucking, and logistics. It qualifies you to operate some of the largest and most important vehicles on the road, making it a critical licence for professional drivers in Queensland.

What Can I Drive with an HC Licence?

The Queensland Department of Main Roads and Transport laws allow you to drive.

Semi-trailers: These are the most common types of heavy combination vehicles, used extensively in the freight and logistics industry.

Prime movers with a trailer: This includes vehicles with a rigid front unit towing a single trailer.

Heavy rigid vehicles towing trailers: You can tow trailers with a GVM greater than 9 tonnes, expanding the range of vehicles you’re qualified to operate.

A class HR vehicle.

A prime mover (more than 8t GVM) with a trailer of more than 9t GVM (semitrailer).

A specially constructed vehicle, including a tractor (more than 8t GVM with more than 2 axles), with or without a trailer of not more than 9t GVM.

The GVM is the maximum weight that a truck can carry including its own weight. This is the maximum or total weight of a loaded rigid vehicle (including body, payload, fuel and driver). It is a figure set by the manufacturer and is lodged with registration authorities and governs all applications and is stamped on the compliance plate of the vehicle (also referred to as GVW or Gross Vehicle Weight).

A HC licence obtained through lessons from Affordable Truck School can open up many job opportunities in the transport and logistics field as well as many other fields of work. A HC licence is useful to have for delivery drivers, interstate and local freight distribution drivers to name a few.

Having an HC Licence means you’re prepared to take on larger roles in the transport and logistics industries, driving the vehicles that keep Australia moving.
